WHAT IS ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION?
Erectile Dysfunction is defined as the inability to get and sustain a firm erection for sex. It is a result of insufficient blood flow to the penis during sexual activity. Facing trouble in getting an erection sometimes is completely normal. But, if you are unable to get an erection most of the time you want to have sex or you can get an erection but it is not lasting enough to have sex or if you are completely helpless when it comes to getting an erection and it’s an ongoing issue, there is a complete possibility of you having erectile dysfunction.
You need to see a doctor if you have:
- Any or all of the concerns mentioned above
- Sexual problems such as delayed or premature ejaculation
- Any heart-related disease or diabetes
CAUSES OF ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION
ED remains a stigma in today’s world and the people suffering from such issues hesitate from consulting a doctor. One of the major reasons leading to this reluctance is the lack of knowledge in this regard. Below we have discussed the causes of Erectile Dysfunction that are often overlooked by the people:
- DEPRESSION
Every function we perform starts in our brain. The sexual desire and enthusiasm to engage in sex starts in your brain and helps to perform function down there. Depression technically being a mental disorder reduces the desire and excitement for physical actions your body performs. Many drugs taken for depression can suppress sex drive, can cause a delay in getting an orgasm, and reduce the ability to get an erection.
- STRESS
Extensive stress can take a toll on your daily life, whether it is related to work or family. When you feel overwhelmed all the time, it becomes difficult to get in the mood for sex. Your penis can also get affected by this, making it difficult to get or keep an erection.
- ALCOHOL
Consuming alcohol to a certain extent is well and good, but binge drinking can be problematic for your sexual activity. Heavy use of alcohol can make it difficult for you to enjoy and can interfere with erections by making it difficult for the signals to reach the brain that tells it to fill the penis with blood. Alcohol is also responsible for reducing the production of testosterone in your body. If you drink daily, consider drinking moderately i.e. one or two drinks a day.
- CERTAIN MEDICATIONS
Some of the contents of the medication can affect your ability to get a firm and long-lasting erection. Drugs such as Diuretics, Antihistamines, Parkinson’s disease drugs, Muscle relaxants, Antidepressants etc may have ED as a potential side effect. If you experience reduced sexual activity while taking any medication, consider talking to your doctor before you stop taking it.
- OBESITY
Sexual performance can be affected by obesity in middle-aged men. It can lower your self-esteem and also result in lower levels of testosterone. An obese person may also be more vulnerable to high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, and eventually reducing the blood flow to the penis.
